Assignments for classes on: Monday 3/18, Tuesday 3/19, and Friday 3/22We had a great class today! I am so proud of everyone for a fantastic String Jamboree concert! It really was a special night! Here's what we did in class today: 1. We talked about our next concert, Spring String Thing, and the t-shirt design contest! (See attached concert announcement for details) 2. Students filled out a concert reflection sheet, where they discussed successes and challenges from the previous concert, along with goals for the rest of the year in strings 3. #68 Rhythm Rap. We spoke the "dog chase the cat..." rhythm, then played it on an open string with the accompaniment track 4. #89 Bile 'em Cabbage Down. We looked at Part B and realized it was all the same note, open A, on "dog chase the cat" rhythm. We played it all together, and bass players played their Part B, which is a real bass line! 5. We sang through the notes for Part A of Bile 'em Cabbage, then played all of Part A together 6. Echo game- students echoed parts of #88 Frere Jacques. Then, we played the whole thing! Assignment for next week: #69, 88, 89 (Parts A and B) Bonus: try Can Can #92 very slowly! Also.... don't forget to fill in your practice times in the March Madness calendar. T-shirt designs are due Friday April 5th HERE is a video of the String Jamboree concert :)
A Letter to StudentsDear 3rd graders,
Please read over this carefully with your families so you know exactly what to do and where to go for the concert! I am so excited and hope you are too, it's going to be a wonderful performance! 1. Arrive at the WHS field house 6:45pm on Wednesday 3/13 with the following: - yourself in your concert clothes (white top, black bottoms, black shoes, any color tie for boys) - instrument (labeled with your name) - folding music stand (labeled with your name, bass players will be given a stand to use) - music. Lighten your binder BEFORE you arrive by leaving your Essential Elements book at home. Your music stand will fall over if your binder is too heavy! Also be sure to have your concert songs in order in your binder before you arrive so they are ready: Ode to Joy, Celebrate this Day, then String Jam Twinkle should all be next to each other. 2. Find your classroom teacher's name on a big sign on the side of the gym. Unpack there quickly and push your closed case against the wall. 3. Go to the tuning station at the very BACK of the gym and get your instrument tuned by a high school student 4. Go to the 3rd grade section (right in front of the tuning station, where I will be standing!) and find your color on the seat: Violins = pink Violas = yellow Cello = green Bass = blue Choose your seat wisely, please DO NOT set up next to a friend you will want to talk to during the concert! Choose a seat where you can focus and do your best! 5. Set up your stand and music at the appropriate colored seat. DO NOT warm up, quietly sit in ready position and wait 6. All groups will practice, then we will try Celebrate this Day and String Jam Twinkle together before the concert starts 7. Concert starts at 7:30 with us playing Ode to Joy. Then we sit and listen quietly and respectfully for all other groups to perform. 8. To finish the concert, play Celebrate this Day, followed by String Jam Twinkle. Please be on your best behavior, be focused and paying attention the whole time so you can be ready for the next direction. I am so proud of your hard work, please show the audience and I your personal best at the performance! See you soon! Ms. Davis What to Practice: Concert WeekIt is hard to believe that the String Jamboree is next week! Here's what you should continue to work on preparing for next week's concert. The songs we will perform are 1. Ode to Joy 2. Celebrate this Day 3. Twinkle Variations Ode to Joy (just 3rd grade strings, play twice) Click the link above for an incredible video :) Here is how it will be performed: Piano intro 1st time - violin/viola play Harmony 1, cello/bass play Melody OR Harmony 2 Piano intro 2nd time - violin/viola play Melody OR Harmony 2, cello/bass play Harmony 1 ***practice each part separately, then perform it straight through the way you will play it in the concert (ex: if you play violin, play Harmony 1 followed directly by Melody/Harmony 2). Remember to use long smooth bows to get a clear sound! Celebrate this Day (finale with all students grades 3-12) You should have practiced this several lines at a time in small sections. It is time to play bigger sections/the whole thing straight through. How to practice this in steps (after you've practiced the whole thing several lines at a time): 1. Pluck whole thing through, saying notes as you play, counting rests 2. Bow whole thing through, counting rests when needed 3. Repeat step 1, but play with RECORDING HERE so you can here the high school parts (click the link to hear recording) 4. Repeat step 2, but add recording above. Go back through and repeat steps 1-4 until you are comfortable playing through the whole thing with the recording using your bow String Jam Twinkle (finale with all students grades 3-12) Use the "Twinkle Variations" sheet. It will be performed TWICE: Piano intro (played in Mississippi Hot dog rhythm) Mississippi Hot Dog variation Piano intro (played in half note rhythm as written) Slow Twinkle, as written using half notes (du-u's) SEE DOCUMENT BELOW FOR CONCERT INFO
Bonus Songs (for students to try when they are super comfortable and confident with concert music)
